Novus Defense Fund Confidential · Limited Partner Brief · 2026

NOVUS

Defense Innovation Fund

A $1B venture fund that invests alongside the U.S. Department of War, in companies the government has already funded and committed to buy from.

Most venture funds are a bet that a customer shows up. Novus starts after the customer has already committed.

The Fund

Novus Defense Fund is a $1 billion vehicle that supplies the private capital the government no longer deploys directly. The Department of War identifies the company, funds the prototype, validates the capability, and confirms the requirement. What it does not do is write the check that turns a proven prototype into a company capable of delivering at contract scale. That is the capital we provide, against demand that already exists.

$1B
Target fund size, investing at the point of transition from prototype to production contract
Pre-identified
Deal flow arrives through the partnership, not through open-market sourcing
Validated
The customer, the requirement, and the budget exist before we invest

Why This Is Not A Typical Venture Fund

Run the standard defense-tech diligence template against this fund and you will measure the wrong things. The difference is structural. We are not sourcing deals. We are evaluating deals the government has already sourced.

Conventional venture risk
Will anyone buy this? The fund underwrites product-market fit, go-to-market execution, and the discovery of a first customer.
The Novus risk
The buyer is identified. The requirement is documented. The question is execution and bureaucratic navigation, not demand.
Why that matters
The largest cause of early-stage loss is gone before the first dollar moves. What remains is a narrower risk, and one an investor can actually price.

The Partnership

This is not an edge built from relationships. It is a public-private partnership built over years, in a window that has since closed. A for-profit fund cannot retroactively build a nonprofit partner embedded across the armed forces. Where the government's funding mandate ends, Novus begins.

Embedded
The leadership of the innovation network, program officers who award contracts, and technical partners sit inside the structure rather than alongside it.
Forward visibility
Direct knowledge of technology roadmaps and which capabilities are favored, before that information reaches the private market.
Long term partnership
Continuous engagement with each branch about requirements, rather than approaching the government to sell into it.

The Track Record

The platform is operating, and its results are auditable. Seven unicorns have emerged from a cohort of 67 companies. Selection has sharpened: a recent cohort of six produced six defense unicorns, one of them now valued at $2.3 billion.

7
Unicorns produced from the platform to date
67
Companies in the originating cohort
$2.3B
Valuation of a single recent portfolio company
12

6
Of those in the energy sector, six across other domains
$38B
Defense procurement deployed by the team's acquisition lead

We do not invest in every company the government funds. We invest in the ones with the strongest commercial trajectory, and we are positioned to know which those are.

The Team

The investment committee pairs auditable venture experience with procurement authority. Understanding the sales cycle is the differentiator, because knowing the buyer is what converts a prototype into a contract.

Venture discipline
A managing partner with over twenty years and an auditable defense-tech track record at an established early-stage firm.
Procurement authority
Leadership that has deployed approximately $38 billion in defense procurement and has navigated the transition from prototype to production repeatedly.
Institutional operations
Fund infrastructure designed previously for $1.6 billion under management and tested against tier-one allocators, with an operational due diligence framework already drafted.
